My Art and Digital Media Class Blog

BLAH BLAH BLAH

Day #2 and By George I Think I’ve got (part of) it!

So after the first class I wasn’t really sure what the class was really about. I knew we were not making art with digital means, but had no idea what we were going to actually be learning. Now I believe we are learning how educators can use technological tools to assist in the development of curriculum and throughout the duration of a course.

I was most interested in the field trip lesson plan that we worked on today. It was good to work with Elizabeth, we quickly agreed on a age group, location, objective and title. Then we came up with several activities I feel might be feasible in a “real” classroom

The reading conversation about the technology addict was good, I particularly felt his thoughts on machine centered methodologies was interesting. Based on the conversation we had about this reading, I also question if we are beginning to see a serious revolt against media? This question became more clear to me this morning when I realized how valuable that 12″ x 8″ wide cereal box cover is for those corporations as advertising space.

As for Plato it is just too damned kitschy sounding for me to take seriously. I know it is because I have been raised in a space where Plato is commonly quoted by soccer moms and in the future I will try to ignore this and listen to his voice and not the soccer mom’s but this time around it was hard.

Next up is the group miniature research project. I think that sounds alright, but I am really ready to learn what are big project for the semester is focused on.

Is this 2 pages? – No Way.

  1. It’s not too pages, but getting closer to the kind of substantial thought I was getting at.

And yes- “we are learning how educators can use technological tools to assist in the development of curriculum and throughout the duration of a course.” That is a good summary. Hopefully other agendas will be revealed throughout the course of the course.

A revolt against media? Hmmmm. I think we humans love our media. However, the question we all need to be asking as educators (and citizens of this society) is who is producing the media, who are they producing it for and what is their objective in doing so. Marketing is big budget mass education. What I find most invigorating about digital media is that every single one of us have the tools to produce our own multimedia–to educate, to share ideas, etc. And this shifts the traditional power structure from media consumption to media PRODUCTION…for us and our students. If we’re not lazy about it….

  3. I agree that “we” need to be concerned with who is producing media and for what reasons, I believe also that is what Norman was getting at with his discussion of the TV staffers hthat you had us read.

Which leads me to the revolt that I mentioned previously. I know that it is likely just a few chrunchy folks that are disowning TV as a valid form of media. I am not one of these people. However, 5 years ago I didn’t know anyone in the mindset that indy media is tops, self information is the only trusted source, etc. Today I know dozens of these people. Have my friends changed? Sure, but not that much. There must be some type of change happening in these people for them to make this type of intiative, no?
